Redash alternative
Redash still runs. The question is who looks after the server.
Hosted Redash shut down in 2021, and the open-source project carries on with the community at a maintenance pace. If you keep an instance alive just for queries, charts and alerts, DataRunner does that job with no server to upgrade, and imports your queries with their parameters.
Bring your queries
Export through the Redash API
With an admin API key, GET /api/queries?page_size=250 returns your queries as JSON. If you have more than 250, repeat with &page=2 and import each file.
Import in Settings → Import
Pick Redash, upload the JSON and check the preview before anything is created. Archived or empty queries show up in the list of what did not come across, with the reason.
Parameters stay parameters
{{ start_date }} becomes :start_date, bound as a parameter: no quotes in the SQL and no injection risk. The preview shows which data source each query came from, so you point it at the right connection.
What you used, and where it is here
| In Redash | In DataRunner |
|---|---|
| SQL editor with schema autocomplete | Autocomplete with the catalog's descriptions, ⌘↵ on the statement, formatting, and queries save themselves |
| Text, number, date and list parameters | The same types, with options from another query and values enforced on the server |
| Visualizations and dashboards | 13 chart types, dashboards with filters, PDF, and the dashboard sent on a schedule by email or Slack |
| Scheduled result refresh | Schedules in each one’s own timezone, and the result delivered: table in the body, CSV, Excel or PDF, by email, Slack, Telegram, WhatsApp or webhook |
| Alerts when a value crosses a threshold | Reports that only go out when there are results, and database, URL and server monitors that alert on the channel you choose |
| Share a dashboard by link | Interactive public links, with a password and an expiry date |
| Query snippets | Reusable snippets in the editor |
| A server, Postgres and Redis to keep upgraded | Nothing to host. Connections use TLS, and credentials are encrypted at rest with AES-GCM |
What we do not have yet
- Visualizations and dashboards are not imported. The queries are, and a chart takes a few clicks to rebuild.
- Not every Redash data source has a connector here. Check the database list in the docs before you move.
- DataRunner is a managed service. If everything has to run inside your network, self-hosted Redash is still the option.
One less server to look after
Create a free account, connect the database and import the JSON. Queries arrive private, and you share them when you choose.
